Prospect Journey Attribution for Pipedrive

Recent Project Overview

Automated Sales recently built a prospect journey attribution tool for Pipedrive, giving sales and marketing teams a clear view of the full path a prospect took before becoming a deal — not just the last thing they clicked.

The tool tracks paid ad clicks, website visits, email activity and sales activity already logged in Pipedrive, stitches them into a single timeline per prospect, and writes the key attribution data straight onto the Person and Deal records the sales team already works in every day.

The result is a way to answer "where did this deal actually come from?" without leaving Pipedrive, exporting anything, or asking someone to build a report.

The Challenge

Most attribution stops at whichever ad or email a prospect clicked last. That tells you what closed the deal, but not what opened it.

Businesses running paid ads, email campaigns and content marketing alongside Pipedrive commonly run into the same gaps:

  • Which channel actually started the conversation — the first touch, not the last?
  • How many times did a prospect engage before a deal was even created?
  • Which campaigns are quietly doing the early-stage work that later touches get credit for?
  • Is marketing spend actually connected to what the sales team sees in the pipeline?
  • How do you report on any of this without stitching together ad platform exports, email tool data and CRM records by hand?

Answering these usually means jumping between Google Ads, email platforms and Pipedrive, then manually reconciling everything in a spreadsheet — a process most teams don't have time to repeat regularly.

The Solution

We built a lightweight tracking layer that sits between a business's website and their Pipedrive account.

A single script tag, Google Tag Manager container, or WordPress plugin captures every ad click, page visit and campaign parameter for a visitor. Once that visitor identifies themselves — filling in a form, booking a call, becoming a lead — their tracked history is linked to their Pipedrive Person, and every subsequent sales activity (calls, stage changes, emails) is folded into the same timeline.

From there, the tool writes first-touch and last-touch attribution — channel, source, medium, campaign and landing page — directly onto custom fields on the Deal, alongside a one-click link to view the complete journey.

What We Built

The project included:

  • A tracking snippet (script tag, Google Tag Manager tag, or WordPress plugin) that captures ad clicks, UTM parameters and page visits without needing a developer to maintain it
  • Automatic identity resolution, linking anonymous website activity to a Pipedrive Person once they convert
  • A full visual timeline combining website behaviour with Pipedrive's own activity and deal-stage history
  • Custom Pipedrive fields populated automatically with first-touch and last-touch channel, source, medium and campaign — filterable, sortable and reportable like any other Pipedrive field
  • A dashboard summarising channel performance and recently active prospects across the whole account, with CSV export
  • Multi-tenant support, so the same tool can serve multiple client accounts independently

Example Use Cases

Marketing Attribution

See which campaigns and channels are genuinely responsible for starting the conversations that turn into pipeline, rather than crediting whichever touchpoint happened to come last.

Sales Context on Every Deal

Sales reps can open a Deal and immediately see the ad, email or page that brought a prospect in — useful context for a call, without asking marketing.

Marketing and Sales Reporting

Because attribution lands on real Pipedrive fields, it can be filtered, grouped and reported on using Pipedrive's own tools — no separate attribution platform to maintain.

Campaign Performance Review

The dashboard's channel breakdown makes it straightforward to spot which sources are driving genuinely engaged prospects versus which are generating clicks that go nowhere.

The Outcome

The project delivered a working attribution layer that connects website and ad activity to Pipedrive without disrupting how the sales team already works — no new system to log into, no extra data entry, and no waiting on an app marketplace review to go live.

It also creates a foundation for further reporting and automation, such as:

  • Automatic lead scoring based on channel and engagement history
  • Campaign-level ROI reporting alongside Pipedrive's existing pipeline reports
  • Alerts when high-value channels produce a new lead

Why It Matters

This project is a good example of layering useful data onto a CRM without replacing it or adding friction for the team using it day to day.

Pipedrive continues to be the single place the sales team works. The attribution tool simply makes sure the data marketing already has — which ad, which email, which page — actually reaches that record, instead of staying locked inside separate ad and email platforms.

For businesses spending on paid ads or email marketing and using Pipedrive to manage the pipeline, that connection is often the missing link between marketing spend and sales results.

Project Highlights

  • Full prospect journey, not just last-click attribution
  • Writes directly to Pipedrive custom fields — no separate dashboard required to see it
  • Works via script tag, Google Tag Manager, or a WordPress plugin
  • Combines website, ad, email and Pipedrive sales activity in one timeline
  • Multi-tenant, so it can support several client accounts from one deployment
